Have New York and federal income taxes completed for free if total household income was $50,000 or less

FREE! Yes, you can have both your federal and New York State income tax returns completed and filed for free if your total household income was $50,000 or less in 2011.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is again offering free tax preparation by trained certified tax preparers from now through April 12. To see if you qualify for this service, or to make an appointment, call 2-1-1 (or 1-800-901-2180).

The Broome County locations and available days and times are:

  • Workforce New York, 171 Front Street, Binghamton, N.Y.; Mondays through Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • United Way of Broome County, 101 South Jensen Road, Vestal, N.Y.; Tuesdays, Wednesdays (February only), and Thursdays, 4 to 7 p.m.

Appointments are required at both locations.

In addition, by calling 2-1-1 (or 1-800-901-2180), you could also learn about other free tax preparation in Broome County sponsored by the AARP Tax Aide program. These sites are open during weekdays, usually from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. (The site at the Broome County Library is also open on Saturdays.) Most of these sites require advanced appointment, but a few are walk-in sites with no appointment required. These sites are scattered throughout Broome County and include Binghamton, Endicott, Endwell, Harpursville, Johnson City, Vestal, and Whitney Point

All returns are filed electronically and refunds usually are available within two weeks.

All returns will be checked to see if you are eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. The amount of this tax credit varies depending upon income, filing status, and number of children. For a couple with three or more children filing their taxes jointly and a income of less than $49,078, the credit could be up to $5,751.

The free tax preparation program is a service of the Broome-Tioga CA$H Coalition.
